Catalogue Description A structured program of readings and
essays constituting a preparation for graduate research in the student’s chosen
area of interest

General Description The course provides a structure to
assist each student in framing the final project in Architectural Design.
Students engage in original research utilizing a variety of investigative tools
and present the body of knowledge developed through research in a manner which
leads to architectural expression.
Educational Objective Each student engages the process of
research with an understanding of the meaning, opportunities and methods of
primary research. The relationship between research and design is explored
through readings, discussion and representation. Issues represented include
aspects of site that express geography, history and occupation, as well as
explorations of specific architectural issues including analysis of typology,
structure, material and representation.
Instructional
Method Seminars, discussions of
readings, workshops, and reviews
Required text Preliminary readings will be set
for the whole class; subsequently, students will be required to pursue
individual programs of reading and research relating to their projects.
Term Project Students will be required to prepare
a package of material which will form the foundation for their final project: a
thesis statement, a project program and site, a bibliography and catalogue of
materials collected, and documentary drawings or models.

Attendance Policy The University of Miami has no provision for unexcused absences. Attendance at all classes is expected. All excuses are to be submitted in writing for the instructor’s approval.
