The Language of Classical Architecture

ARC 408/510: Upper Level Studio, 6 credits, Spring 2007

Dr Richard John

This studio will depart from the usual format of a single design problem in order to give students a thorough grounding in both the vocabulary (the orders) and the syntax (composition) of classical architecture. It will include workshops, seminars, typological analyses and short design exercises. To ensure that the issues of contemporary architecture are addressed, the approaches employed will be mostly based on twentieth century textbooks, eg.  John Harbeson, Rob Krier, Robert Adam and Robert Chitham, though earlier authorities, such as Vitruvius, Palladio, Vignola, Perrault and Gibbs will also be studied.

A series of esquisse (sketch) problems will lead the students through a traditional course of study beginning with the vocabulary of classical moldings, the classical orders of architecture and the principles of architectural composition and proportion. The application of this new knowledge will be demonstrated through a sequence of increasingly complex problems requiring solutions in both plan and elevation. Anthony J. Taylor will teach two workshops on the traditional Beaux Arts technique of rendering drawings in ink wash.
