French Architecture, Landscape Design and Urbanism
from the Middle Ages to the Modern Movement

PROGRAM for 14-20 March (7 days based in Paris)
Five day-long tours within Paris:
Day 1. Place des Victoires, Les Halles, Ste Eustache, Rue de Rivoli, Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois, Louvre, Palais Royal, Tuileries gardens, Place de la Concorde, Place Vendôme,
Day 2. Notre Dame, Place Dauphine, Sainte-Chapelle, Hôtel de Ville, St Germain-des-Prés, Maison de Verre (VIIe), Odeon, Panthéon (Ste Geneviève), Bibliothèque Ste Geneviève, Saint Etienne du Mont, Val-de-Grace, Saint Sulpice, Palais Luxembourg, Observatoire, Les Invalides, Musée d’Orsay
Day 4. Centre Georges Pompidou, The Marais, Place de Vosges, Musée Carnavalet, Hotel Soubise
Day 6. La Madeleine, Opéra Garnier, Champs Elysées, Gare Du Nord, Social housing and Post office in Ave Jean Jaurès (Aldo Rossi, 1991), Barrière de la Villette, Parc de la Villette (XIXe)
Day 7. Fondation Le Corbusier (Villas La Roche and Jeanneret), Rue Franklin apartments (Perret), Arc de Triomphe, Parc Monceau
Two day trips outside of Paris:
Day 3. Versailles (Château, park and town)
Day 5. Saint Denis and Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye
REQUIREMENTS: Following the trip a paper comparing and contrasting two buildings or urban spaces will be required.
COSTS: In addition to UM tuition students should budget for the cost of airfare and local accommodations. Dr John is happy to give advice and assistance with booking flights and accommodations. This course is intended for both graduate and undergraduate students
